Update on the National Clinical Programme for Gender Healthcare

In 2025, the HSE formed a working group including clinicians and several LGBTQ+ organisations to develop the model of care for gender healthcare. TENI, Belong To, LGBT Ireland, Trans Healthcare Action, and the Professional Association for Trans Health Ireland joined the working group, alongside clinical staff, HSE staff, and AsIAm, Ireland’s autism charity. The LGBTQ+ organisations share a vision for an Ireland where trans and gender-diverse people can access patient-centred, depathologised, and locally accessible gender-affirming healthcare, based on best international practice.

In recent weeks, THA and PATHI have made the decision to step away from this group. Their departure reflects a deep commitment to their principles, and we completely support and respect their decision.

TENI, LGBT Ireland, Belong To and AsIAm have chosen to remain on the working group at this time. We are staying to continue working towards our shared vision from within this structure. This process is ongoing and far from perfect, but we believe that there is enough ground to be gained, and enough still to be won through this process, for us to stay at the table. For now, we will continue to engage directly to build a model of care that respects trans people and acts in the best interests of the community. We’re still in this process because we believe that it can bring about positive change, and we will stay in it as long as we possibly can.
