Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI) seeks a full- time Family Support and Education Officer to join our team. TENI works to advance the rights and equality of transgender people and their families in Ireland.

Main Responsibilities:

Education support:

Working in partnership with care teams in primary and post-primary schools to develop care plans / transition plans (incl. travel, as required);

Travelling to schools throughout the country to meet staff members and deliver training and support – primary and post primary schools;

Advise and provide input to schools on developing policies for trans inclusion.

Family Support:

Offer direct one-to-one support for families to determine any barrier to family cohesion, accessing healthcare, on-going schooling, or any other issues that may impact on families of trans people;

Collate information pertaining to the needs of families of trans people;

Manage and respond to requests for support and information received via phone and other electronic means (e.g. email, Facebook, etc);

Recruit, train and coordinate volunteers to provide support and information to families in line with TENI policies and procedures;

Coordinate and supervise a national network of family support groups and volunteer facilitators (with administrative support from team);

Coordinate resilience training for families of trans people, young trans people and adult trans people (with Health and Education Manager);

Organise and attend events for trans people and their families including workshops, seminars and the annual family residential weekend (November).

Other duties:

Report writing, record keeping, data collection and analysis;

Maintain a database of contacts, communications, information and training requests;

Keeping an accurate record of expenses for reimbursement;

Key skills and experience for this role include:


Good communicator with an ability to negotiate in an empathetic way;

Group facilitation skills;

Ability to work on own initiative;

Good time keeping;

Good written and verbal communications skills;

Working knowledge of IT, Microsoft Office, social media (e.g. Facebook);

Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.


Excellent knowledge of issues and challenges pertaining to trans people and their families in Ireland (a distinct advantage);

Qualification and/or demonstrable experience of psychology / psychotherapy / social work or social care;

Car owner with full clean driving license and willingness to travel (an advantage)This position requires significant flexibility and travel. Some evening and weekend work will be required.

Terms and Conditions:

This is a 2 year fixed term contract, reviewable [subject to funding]. 37.5 hours per week.
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
