Press Release: Inclusion of Trans Students Discussed at Historic Education Roundtable
Yesterday (Tuesday 6th October), a roundtable discussion of education partners and NGOs working with young trans people took place in the Department of Education and Skills. The event was organised by Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, and hosted by Minister Kevin Humphreys.
"This historic event marks the first time that issues facing young trans people in the education system were addressed at such a high level meeting," said TENI Health and Education Manager Vanessa Lacey. "This was a hugely positive event for what is an absolutely massive and growing concern for us."
Safe, Supportive and Affirming Schools
Speaking in advance of the event, Minister O’Sullivan said: "Young transgender people are a particularly vulnerable group and require appropriate support in all situations, including in schools. The policies, practices and climate in schools can support and nurture young transgender students so that they do not feel isolated and alone."
"Schools must provide a safe, supportive and affirming environment for trans students," said Vanessa Lacey. "It is vital that support structures are put in place for these young, vulnerable individuals and their families."
At the roundtable, issues relating to uniforms, name and pronoun usage, gender segregated facilities and activities, single sex schools, sports, bullying and privacy were discussed. Alex Lawson, a trans student involved in BeLonG To Youth Services, shared his personal experience. The discussion was framed by the passage of the Gender Recognition Act in July, which has been widely celebrated as progressive. However, the Act still excludes young trans people.
Minister Humphreys noted that the Gender Recognition Act was "a milestone for equality in Irish society" but added: "We need to build on that legislative framework, and ensure that schools, just like all other bodies, are welcoming and supportive of people who identify as transgender.”
