Historic Gender Recognition Bill Poised to Become Law

Yesterday (Thursday 9th July), the Gender Recognition Bill passed the Report and Final Stages in Dáil Éireann. The Bill will go to the Seanad on Wednesday 15th July for debate which is the final legislative step before the Bill becomes law. When the Bill is passed in the Seanad it will go to the President to be signed.

"We're delighted that the Gender Recognition Bill will soon become law. Dr. Lydia Foy's twenty-two year journey is coming to an end and the Government will finally recognise Ireland's trans community," said TENI Chief Executive Broden Giambrone.

Age Criteria

During the Dáil debate the issue of legal recognition for trans young people was raised by several TDs who tabled amendments on this issue. They called on the Government to amend the Gender Recognition Bill to recognise and protect trans young people. "We want to thank all of our allies who spoke up for young trans people. We will continue to vigorously advocate for young people to be meaningfully included in all legislation. This is not the end of our work," said Giambrone.

At the debate, Minister Kevin Humphreys announced that the Department of Education will hold a roundtable discussion on trans issues in the autumn with key stakeholders, including TENI and BeLonG To Youth Services.

"We've come a very long way and the passage of the Gender Recognition Bill is a historic moment for our community. Not only does this mark the end of Lydia Foy's legal battle but it signals a new era for trans rights in Ireland," concluded Giambrone.
