Ireland Says YES
On Saturday 23rd May, Ireland made history by becoming the first country in the world to achieve marriage equality by popular vote.
With 62% voting YES, the Irish people were resoundingly clear in their support for equality. As a result, the Constitution will be amended to read: Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.
The passage of this referendum is a historic moment for Ireland's LGBT community. Speaking after the announcement, TENI Chair Sara R. Phillips said, "I am delighted that this referendum has carried. It speaks to the love the Irish people carry in their hearts for their fellow citizens. It shows our sense of fundamental goodness and fairness. Love conquers all."
"I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the campaign for their hard work and passion," continued Phillips. "From all the groups across the country to the canvassers knocking on doors and sharing their stories, we're part of a new Ireland. I'd also like to thank members of the trans community who were on the front lines of this equality issue."
Gender Recognition Bill

The passage of the referendum means that the single requirement, also known as the 'forced divorce' clause, will be removed from the Gender Recognition Bill.
"We are one step closer to Ireland's ideals of equality. This means so much for the trans community. There will be some very relieved happy families today. They will no longer have to choose between their gender identity and their family."
The Government has indicated its intent to pass the Gender Recognition Bill before the summer.
