Ireland's First Transgender Health & Wellbeing Day

2.30PM - 7.30PM | 24 FEB 2011 | THE EDMUND RICE HERITAGE CENTRE, MOUNT SION SCHOOL, BARRACK STREET, WATERFORD

New Health Day for Transgender People in Ireland

Thursday 24 February 2011 marks the first day in Ireland devoted to the health and wellbeing of transgender people. The city of Waterford will host the landmark symposium ‘TransAction’, which will feature guest speakers, wellbeing therapies and a nutritional display.

TransAction is aimed at a wide audience. It hopes to attract healthcare providers, GPs, school principals, transgender people, their families and more.

The conference speakers have professional and personal experience in transgender areas:

  • Dr James Kelly is a psychologist and leading specialist, and a member of WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health);
  • Suzanne Walsh specialises in gender and family support psychotherapy;
  • Bernie Fitzgerald is a parent of a transgender teenager and a counsellor focusing on issues concerning gender.

“This line-up of speakers has a world of experience,” said Vanessa Lacey, Community Development Worker with Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI). “This is really a unique opportunity, and we’re thrilled that the day is open to all and free of charge!”

Following the series of talks, attendees can explore different wellbeing therapies such as reiki and massage. They can have free consultations with beauticians and hairdressers. The Head Chef from Waterford’s Tower Hotel will be on hand to discuss food nutrition and demonstrate a selection of tasty Thai dishes.

“This day is about learning to treat your mind and body well,” said Vanessa. “The information is on transgender issues, but the message is for everyone!”

The day represents a partnership between Waterford City Council, Waterford Area Partnership, LGBT Diversity, Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI) and TranSE – a community group supporting transgender people in the South East.

TransAction will be opened by The Mayor of Waterford, Councillor Mary Roche.

“I’m delighted that this is all happening at a community level,” said Vanessa. “It’s a big year for Waterford, with the Tall Ships arriving in June. This is great opportunity for all of us, and I hope attendees will leave with both mind and body refreshed and invigorated.”
