Transgender issues have been in the news recently - with the publication of the report of the Gender Recognition Advisory Group (GRAG) to the Irish Government in July of this year, the long-running court case taken by Dr Lydia Foy attempting to get the Irish Government to issue a birth certificate recognising her sexual identity, and a case earlier this year which resulted in Louise Hannon being awarded 35,000 euro damages in a constructive dismissal case against her former employers.
But what does transgender really mean? Is it just someone wanting to dress up as a member of the opposite sex? Is it some sort of sexual fetish? Is it a medical condition? Is it something to make jokes about? Or is it something altogether more serious?
In an attempt to dispel some of the confusion and myths surrounding what is really a very important and sensitive issue, OutWest are proud to hold an Information/Workshop Evening on Transgender Issues in The Melting Pot, Castle Court, Roscommon Town on Wednesday October 19th, starting at 7:30pm. This meeting is part of Roscommon County Council's Social Inclusion Awareness Week programme, and is open to everyone.
The event will be hosted by TENI (Transgender Equality Network Ireland) and will be your opportunity to find out what the term Transgender really means, and about the issues affecting transgender people in Ireland today.
